How to Log Meals in the Oura App: Photos, Nutrition Level, and Meal Timing
How Oura Meals works: log food with a photo or a few words, read the Nutrition Level and breakdown, see meal timing next to your sleep, and add glucose with Stelo.
To log a meal in the Oura app, open the Today tab and tap the + button in the bottom-right corner (or open the menu in the upper-left corner). Then take a photo, upload one, or type what you ate. Oura analyzes the meal, rates its nutrition, and places it on a 24-hour clock next to your sleep and wake times. Oura's Meals guide
Logging takes a few seconds, but only if you remember before the plate is empty. This guide covers what Meals needs, how to log, how to read the results, and how to make logging stick.
What you need for Oura Meals
- A Gen3 ring or later with an active Oura membership. Meals isn't available on Gen2 or older rings.
- The Oura app on iPhone or Android.
- Your phone set to English. Meals is currently only available in English. If you don't see it, Oura suggests switching your phone's language to English.
Requirements are from Oura's Meals guide. Meals started in Oura Labs and became a permanent part of the app in 2025. Introducing Metabolic Health at Oura
How to log a meal
- Open the Oura app on the Today tab.
- Tap + in the bottom-right corner, or open the menu in the upper-left corner, and choose to log a meal.
- Take a photo of your meal, upload a photo from your library, or type what you ate. Oura's blog says you can also dictate the description.
- Check the result. Oura analyzes the meal with an AI-assisted tool, and you can edit the meal's name and time.
Snacks and drinks are logged the same way. If Oura can't analyze a photo, retake it or type the meal instead. Oura's Meals guide
If you log after you've eaten, correct the time. Meals tracks when you eat as well as what you eat, so a wrong time skews the picture.
What Oura shows after you log
Nutrition Level
Each meal gets a Nutrition Level: Limited, Fair, Good, or Nutritious. Oura says fiber and protein raise the level, while added sugar and heavy processing lower it. Each meal also counts toward a daily Nutrition Level, so you can spot patterns over a whole day. Oura on Nutrition Level
Nutrition Breakdown
The breakdown estimates six parts of the meal and labels each one low, moderate, or high: Oura's Meals guide
- Protein
- Fiber
- Processing level
- Added sugars
- Total fats
- Total carbs
Meals isn't built around calories. Oura says it is designed to "de-emphasize strict quantification" and to build awareness of fiber, protein, and processing instead of daily targets. Oura Meals
Meal timing
Your meals appear on the 24-hour clock alongside your sleep and wake times. Oura says eating at regular times can support your circadian rhythm. Calibrating your meal regularity can take 3–7 days, depending on how often you log. Oura's Meals guide
Suggestions from Oura Advisor
Oura Advisor adds personalized suggestions to your meals, such as simple swaps or small adjustments. Our Oura Advisor guide covers what else you can ask it, including meal plans that use what is already in your kitchen.
Meal timing and sleep
Oura's Sleep Score tips suggest limiting heavy meals in the 3 hours or so before bed. Oura also says sugary, low-fiber food in the evening can lead to more wake-ups and less deep sleep. Oura's Sleep Score guide
Meals puts your last meal and your bedtime on the same clock, so you can see the gap without working it out yourself. After a week or two, compare evenings with an early dinner to evenings with a late one, and see how your Sleep Score and Readiness look the next morning.
Meals or the "late meal" tag?
Oura has more than 100 tags, including late meal. Tags don't change your scores. They let you compare days with and without a habit. Using tags in Oura
Use the tag when you only want to mark that you ate late. Use Meals when you also want the time and a nutrition estimate.
Glucose with Stelo (US only)
If you connect a Stelo Glucose Biosensor by Dexcom, Meals also shows glucose data related to your meals. Oura's Meals guide According to Oura's Glucose Tracking guide:
- Glucose is available only in the US. It needs an Oura membership, a Stelo account, a Gen3 ring or later, and the app in English.
- Stelo is the only supported sensor. Other continuous glucose monitors, including other Dexcom devices, don't work with Oura.
- Oura calculates your glucose response two hours after you log a meal. Each meal's Time Above Range covers the two hours from the time it was logged, which is one more reason to log when you eat.
- The Time Above Range thresholds are designed for people without diabetes, and glucose data doesn't affect your Oura scores.
Our guide to apps that work with Oura covers Stelo alongside Oura's other integrations.
Why can't I find Meals?
- Your phone isn't set to English. Meals is currently English-only.
- Your ring is a Gen2, or your membership isn't active. Meals needs a Gen3 or later ring with a membership.
- The photo won't analyze. Retake it, or type the meal instead.
- No meal regularity yet. It can take 3–7 days of logging to calibrate.
Oura Ring is not a medical device. Oura asks you not to change your medication, nutrition, or workouts without talking to a doctor first. Oura Meals
Log a meal from your Lock Screen
The hard part of logging meals is remembering to do it. Oura's own iPhone widgets show your scores, ring battery, and a few graphs, but none of the widgets in Oura's widget guide opens meal logging. Oura's widget guide
Ring Widget's Log a Meal widget is a Lock Screen shortcut. Tap it, and the Oura app opens on meal logging. It comes in a circular and a rectangular size. The widget doesn't read or show your meals: logging and analysis happen in the Oura app. Ring Widget is not affiliated with or endorsed by Oura Health Oy.
To add it (iOS 16 or later):
- Open Ring Widget and connect your Oura account.
- Touch and hold your Lock Screen, tap Customize, and select the Lock Screen.
- Tap the widget area below the clock, find Ring Widget in the list, and choose Log a Meal.
- Tap Done.
Ring Widget also has an Advisor widget that opens Oura Advisor in one tap. Our iPhone widget setup guide covers the Home Screen layouts too.
Download Ring Widget free. Log a Meal is a Premium widget; Readiness and Sleep widgets are free.
